Something Fishy

Hey there Nephew and Niece (is there a plural word that includes both I wonder? There is in Spanish. English could use one too. Anyway...). Aunt Shelly here. Besides sending you munchkins postcards I get to write to you on this blog as well. Don't forget to write back. We want to know what you are doing. Your Mom and Dad can help you post to this blog just ask them!

Now, the two of you might just remember that I like fish. Remember that big aquarium we had in the house? Or the trip to see the salmon spawning in Issaquah? Here in Seattle fish are everywhere. I'm going to share some of the special Seattle fish with you but since your wacky Uncle Rick already spilled the beans about the enormous friendly koi that live near my house I thought I'd post a couple more pictures.

This koi has fins that make him look like a dragon-koi but he is very nice and only breathes water not fire--at least he hasn't breathed fire around me but maybe it's a good idea not to make him angry. He likes it when I feed him Purina Koi Chow. He really likes it when you drop the kibble directly into his mouth! How do I know that? Well he swims up close to me and raises his head out of the water and opens his wide!

Here's a picture of your Uncle Rick feeding the koi but I think he's actually trying to get them to pull his finger. Koi are too smart to fall for that joke and good thing too because pulling Uncle Rick's finger can cause rooms to clear and plants to wilt! Don't let him get you with that joke.
See how many fish are in this pool? Some of them are at least 2 feet long. Have you ever petted a fish? These guys will let you and they seem to like it! Just look at them crowding around for attention!

The pool that these koi live in is in a big greenhouse so we can go visit them even in the worst of weather. Can you guess why it's called a greenhouse? It's not painted green. I like to take a book and read (although the koi do not seem to enjoy reading, yet) when I go visit these guys. The greenhouse is also a good place to write or just enjoy a break from the rain. Maybe someday you can visit the koi there too!

So next time perhaps I'll write about some flying fish! Or Orca! Or Salmon! Or Tilapia! Or Fish art! I'll post more about the magical fish (yes, I know that an Orca is not a fish) of Seattle but you guys have to do one thing first...you have to tell me which fish you'd like to read about next.
love,
Yer Aunt Shelly

Hey-- I've been prepping them for months to lay that joke on them!
